WELLY’S Poker Run is on again this year and is sure to let car and bike enthusiasts show off their machines while raising money for a worthy cause.
The poker run, organised by locals to raise money for different causes and charities, will see modified cars and bikes ride around the SE on March 3.
Proceeds are going to the Royal Flying Doctor Service and with help from the Good Ole Boys Car and Bike Club from Edenhope it is hoped that the event will be as successful as last year’s.
“We raised $6000 last year,” organiser Mark Wellington said.
“We had 35-40 cars and 130 bikes, so it was a big event.”
The poker run started about five years ago with what Mr Wellington describes as “a few mates going for a ride”.
“There were about half a dozen of us and it has grown over the years.”
Donations for the initial ride totalled “a few hundred bucks” and went to the victims of the Victorian bushfires.
The Royal Flying Doctor Service is a cause close to Mark’s heart after his son Nick, now almost seven years old, was born prematurely and needed to be flown out to Adelaide.
“The Flying Doctor service does a bit of work down here and in Mount Gambier, so this is our way of giving back,” Mr Wellington said.
Donations in the past have also been made to the Flinders Medical Centre in Adelaide.
This year’s event starts at the Naracoorte Showgrounds with a breakfast and registration at 8am.
Show and shine is from 8.30am with no charge for the public to come and have a look at the entrants in the run.
The run aims to leave by 10.30am before heading to Beachport for lunch then making its way back to Naracoorte showgrounds.
At the conclusion of the run there will be entertainment from bands Last Chance and Broken Back and a presentation ceremony, with celebrations sure to run into the night fully catered by the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
Camping is available at the showgrounds with breakfast also served Sunday and a reminder that there is no BYO and no entry after 10pm on Saturday night.
