THE United Kingdom’s BBC TV is helping to put Naracoorte Caves on the world map.
The network filmed at the World Heritage listed site for the third part of a series called “Wonders of Life” over two days on February 5-6.
The series is being presented by UK celebrity Professor Brian Cox of Manchester University and follows a two-part popular series called “Wonders of the Solar System” and “Wonders of the Universe”.
The episode filmed at Naracoorte Caves was about size; and how size affects how people interact with the environment, with a strong focus on the physics of animals.
Former Caves manager Steve Bourne said the film crew had been in Australia to look at the extremities of animals.
Filming had been done at the caves because it was one of few locations where the crew could see bats in their own natural environment.
“They wanted somewhere they could see bats flying out of the caves and view the bats undisturbed,” he said.
The caves were one of many filming locations nationwide. The show features great white sharks at Port Lincoln, red kangaroos at Fowlers Gap, mountain ash trees and segments of various creatures in Brisbane, Perth and Christmas Island.
Two film crews stayed in Naracoorte for three nights while filming two different versions of the series, one for the UK and the other for worldwide audiences.
Mr Bourne was asked to talk on camera about his extensive knowledge of bats.
The documentary will be released in March 2013.
