Naracoorte Police, CFS and SA Ambulance responded to the accident after a B-double semi trailer/stock carrier loaded with sheep travelling to Portland rolled over.
The vehicle was carrying 670 sheep at the time and the accident caused a large number of sheep to be killed in the impact while another large number had to be euthanised due to injuries received.
This was done by the Naracoorte Lucindale Council general inspector and it is believed that about 210 sheep in total were killed: 100 on impact, 80 destroyed at the scene and a further 30 later destroyed at the Naracoorte Regional Livestock Centre where the surviving animals were taken.
