Top three cricket teams win

THE top three teams defeated the bottom three in Naracoorte senior cricket on Saturday.

Unfortunately, the bottom three teams all batted first and struggled, which resulted in short run chases for the stronger sides.

Potentially the most even game was at WORTLEY OVAL, where third-placed Lucindale batted first against fourth-placed Townies.

Lucindale started fairly enough, with most top order batsmen getting a start, but Trevor Sayers (3/10) took wickets regularly and returning veteran Jamie Stokie (2/15) put the clamps on at the other end.

No one reached 20 as Lucindale succumbed for a below-par 89.

In reply, Townies lost early wickets to be 4/39 thanks to good bowling from Gerard McGrath (1/11) and Greg Fisher (2/14), but Lucindale never had enough runs in the bank and Paul Schroder (14no) and Brodie Foster (32no) knocked off the runs easily in the 26th over.

At IB EDWARDS OVAL, hosts Devils batted first against Demons and were in real trouble from the start with Michael Cappelluti (3/7) on song, reducing them to 4/10.

Aaron Lomman (27) and Steve Anderson (16) tried to rescue the sinking ship with a good partnership but Brodie Borg (3/16) came on to clean up the tail and Devils were bowled out for 78.

Demons started the run chase poorly to be 3/26 - Lomman claiming two wickets - but Borg (42no) joined opener Anthony Munro (24no) for an unbeaten stand of 61 to guide their team home to an easy win.

At KYBYBOLITE, Borders/Apsley batted first and were in trouble from the outset.

Most batsmen made a start, but Mitchell Loft (43) was the only one to go on with it as all 10 Kyby bowlers had a go, with most of them enjoying some success.

The Borders tail added some late runs to finish with 118.

Rowan Werchiwski started the run chase with a bang, hitting a four and six from the first two balls of the innings, but two quick wickets stalled the run chase.

Phil Werchiwski (27) joined his brother at the wicket and they put on 50 runs to guide the Tigers to safety before Lee Curnow (34no) finished the job off. Rowan Werchiwski made a hard-hitting unbeaten 59 to take man of the match honours as Kyby finished at 3/124 from 23 overs.

This week, Lucindale will host Devils, Demons host Kyby in a top-of-the-table clash at Wortley Oval (11am start) and Borders will host Townies at Frances.

Ladder:

Kybybolite 39 points, 5.18 run rate; Demons 39, 4.59; Townies 33, 5.23; Lucindale 33, 4.26; Borders 18, 3.00; Devils 6, 3.29.
