A PRE-season social hockey competition is proving a popular way of getting new people involved in the sport.
The weekly games at the Naracoorte hockey fields are also serving as a fun way for regular hockey players to ease into the upcoming season proper.
Seven teams involving more than 50 players are taking part in modified matches every Thursday night, with two matches running concurrently alongside one another on the same field.
One of the organisers, Andrew Doecke, said the concept had been well supported and was proving a success on several fronts.
"It's a little bit of pre-season (for the regular players), and we're also trying to introduce new people to the sport," he said.
"The umpires are pretty relaxed, so the kids get a go, and with the new players they know who's who and they look after them."
The games cater for people of all abilities and ages, ranging from as young as six years old up to veteran players in their 50s.
"The most experienced players understand to encourage new people so it's a bit of fun for everyone."
The social competition will run until mid-March and there's a chance some matches will be played under the new lights at the hockey fields.
The lights have to be adjusted to the correct angle before being used for competition, but when that happens over the next couple of weeks, it will be game on.
Organisers would welcome anyone interested in trying hockey to join in.
