AFTER his own battle with cancer, local identity Mike Riddle wants to help others going through the same experience.
His new book "The Kanceroo" will be officially launched in Adelaide this weekend by renowned radio host Peter Goers.
Featuring a series of poems based on familiar Australian animals, each has a theme which relates to a specific element of the cancer "journey".
The Numbutt faces the fear of injections, the Pitypus says it's alright to feel sad and then there's the "never give in" Wombattleon.
Aimed at sick children, parents and loved ones "The Kanceroo" brings to light the emotions felt along the way and offers support.
Mr Riddle, a former school teacher in Lucindale, has been working on the book, which is accompanied by another series of poems called "I'm Confused", since 2009 with Adelaide illustrator Mandy Foot.
"I was really surprised at how easily it came together," he said.
"Mandy was a lovely person to work with, very friendly and very open."
Mr Riddle hopes to distribute the books to hospitals so it's available to children who have a challenge ahead of them.
"Having been through the cancer journey myself I thought I would write something for the kids," he said.
"It's to help people get through it and keep their feet on the ground."
Printed locally by Hansen Print, $5 from every sale will go to Cancer Council SA.
The book launch will be held in the SA Writers Centre in Adelaide at 2pm on Sunday.
Books are available from the Naracoorte Art Gallery or online at www.caughtjester.com.au.
