NARACOORTE is buzzing with activities this Youth Week.
From April 5 to 14 the Independent Learning Centre is hosting a spate of activities including an appearance from a celebrity chef.
What's on?
Naracoorte Town Square, 11am, Tuesday.
- Mock accident.
"Shattered" will see a car crash simulated for local school students to watch by the Naracoorte Lucindale Community Road Group and combined emergency services. Aimed at promoting the road safety message to young drivers and the impact of serious motor vehicle crashes, it will also highlight the effects on the human body and how a person's life can change dramatically in a moment of lapsed concentration. The exercise will be confrontational and will be followed by an open discussion forum in the town hall.
Naracoorte Lucindale Community Road Safety Group has invited Year 11 and 12 students from Naracoorte High School, Lucindale Area School, Bordertown High School, Keith Area School, Naracoorte Independent Learning Centre, Penola High School and Kangaroo Inn Area School to attend the event.
Naracoorte High School, all day, Wednesday.
- Celebrity chef workshops
Callum Hann - Masterchef 2010 runner-up and Masterchef All Stars winner - will be in town for workshops with students from the Independent Learning Centre and Naracoorte High School.
He will spend the day demonstrating his cooking skills and providing hands-on help to students.
Williamson Hall, Naracoorte High School, 7pm, Wednesday.
- Community Cooking Challenge
The challenge will see four local football and netball clubs (Padthaway, Naracoorte, Kybybolite, Borders), plus a mystery team (Charlie's Angels), face off in a pre-season stoush to find out who can cook the best.
Each team will be required to produce 22 tasting sized serves of savoury and sweet dishes to the judges - a panel of 20 paying guests and two invited chefs. They will get a total of $100 to put towards ingredients to get them started and can use any resources available to them. It is suggested they get donations of what they can from the wider community to assist with costs and the high school's home economics centre will be available to use. Dishes will be scored out of 10 by the guests and chefs and feedback given with the winning team receiving $500.
The theme of the evening is local produce or "paddock to plate". It costs $100 per head to be a seated guest and tickets went on sale Tuesday so get in quick as there are only 20 available. Team names will be pulled out of a hat prior to determine the order of serving. All money raised will be donated to the Community Food Bank via the Independent Learning Centre.
Providing entertainment during the dinner will be band California Cousin and anyone is welcome to watch at the small cost of a gold coin. There will also be a licensed bar.
Naracoorte High School, all day, Thursday.
