AROUND 150 people packed the Naracoorte Football Club on Friday night for a "thank you" dinner celebrating the contribution of the migrant population to the community.
Naracoorte Lucindale Council and the Migrant Resource Centre of SA put on the dinner, which was catered by local Afghanistani women as thanks to the Naracoorte community for acceptance of the migrant community.
State Government Minister for Education and Child Development and Multicultural Affairs Jennifer Rankine and Speaker of the SA House of Assembly Michael Atkinson were special guests at the dinner.
Minister Rankine paid tribute to the "beautiful tapestry of multiculturalism" on show at the dinner - with Australia, Afghanistan and various Asian and African countries represented - and the way the community had embraced the migrant population.
"You have made them all truly welcome," she said.
She praised the work of the Migrant Resource Centre of SA, which helps thousands of migrants a year.
"Thank you for your tireless efforts," Minister Rankine said. "Not just for this dinner but across the board."
She also recognised the work of local government in its "leading role" for the community.
