A SENIOR Bordertown police officer, who has worked in Naracoorte, is facing serious assault charges and has been suspended from duty pending court proceedings.
Sergeant Michael Hutchinson, 49, has appeared in Mount Gambier Magistrates court on two charges over an alleged incident in Bordertown on January 27 this year.
The charges, aggravated assault and aggravated assault with an offensive weapon, will now be heard in December.
Hutchinson's lawyer, Richard Yates of Tindal Gask Bentley Lawyers, has confirmed Mr Hutchinson as his client.
"I can confirm he is a police officer and the allegations are denied…the charges will be vigorously defended," Mr Yates said.
"I can't make any further comment as the matter is before the court".
A spokesperson for South Australia Police issued a statement following inquiries by The Border Chronicle
"The officer referred to is currently suspended from duty pending the outcome of the charges and any disciplinary action."
Hutchinson is due to appear in court in Mount Gambier on December 9.
