Tourism numbers up

WATTLE Range visitor information centres - including Penola/Coonawarra - are experiencing near record summer tourist seasons.

More than 6500 people have visited the Penola/Coonawarra, Millicent and Beachport VICs so far this season, a 7 per cent increase on the same time last year.

According to Wattle Range Council mayor Peter Gandolfi: “Tourists are choosing to holiday in our region because of the diverse range of experiences we have on offer including wine, food, four wheel driving and fishing."

These experiences coupled with a vibrant summer event calendar have contributed to the increase in visitation.

“For the December period we saw more interstate and international visitors in the region with an increase of 7 per cent and 6 per cent respectively, compared to the same time last year.

"The Wattle Range Council operates three visitor information centres (VICs), provides sponsorship and in-kind assistance to regional events and is a financial contributor to regional tourism organisations and marketing initiatives.
