What's our top dog?

KELPIES are officially top dog in the Naracoorte Lucindale Council area.

According to figures provided by the council, the popular Australian working dog is by far the most popular in the local area, perhaps owing to the many working dogs on farms in the district.

There are 558 registered Kelpies on the council's books, with the next best being the diminutive Jack Russell (168) and fellow sheepdog Border Collie (152).

Naracoorte's Jason Mednis and partner Faye's three-and-a-half month old pup, Ruby, contributed to the number.

"We bought her off a farmer down at Bool Lagoon," Jason said.

"In a litter of 10 she was probably not going to be as good a working dog as the others so we took her off his hands."

The figures from the local area are generally reflected State-wide, although the Kelpie is only the second most popular breed in SA at the moment according to the Dog and Cat Management Board.

SA's most popular breed is the Maltese, of which there were more than 31,000 registered last financial year.

The Labrador Retriever rounds out the State's top three.
