Council warns: Keep dogs on a leash

IF you take your dog out for a walk in Naracoorte, make sure it's on a leash.

Naracoorte Lucindale Council's general inspector Darren Callaghan has started patrolling both the north and south parklands to ensure dogs are under effective control with a lead.

If they're not, an expiation fee of $150 could result.

Under council by-law number five:

1. Dog on leash areas:

1.1. A person must not, without the council's permission, allow a dog under that person's control, charge or authority (except an accredited guide dog, hearing dog or disability dog that is required to remain off-lead in order to fulfil its functions) to be or remain:

1.1.1 on Local Government land or public place to which the council has resolved that this subclause applies; and

1.1.2 on any park or reserve during times when organised sport is being played; unless the dog is secured by a strong leash not exceeding 2m in length.

In February, council officers impounded eight dogs with all eight being returned to their owners.
