SE con-artist caught after duping backpacker

THE fraudster at the centre of a backpacker scam targeting in the Coonawarra region has been caught.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman confirmed the arrest of Mario Linno, who duped numerous backpackers including Logan Chovet (The Herald, March 20), after he was tracked down in Melbourne at the end of last month.

"Police arrested a 21-year-old Estonian national on March 26 in Melbourne and he was charged with six counts of obtain property by deception," the spokesperson said.

Linno - also known as Mario Lino - had allegedly been using the advertising/trade website Gumtree to falsely advertise work in the Coonawarra region.

Backpackers travelling the area, like Mr Chovet would, respond to his ad thinking he was a genuine employer looking for labour.

They would allegedly be asked to send money ahead to purchase a work uniform but when they arrived, there was no uniform and no work.

The police spokesperson told the Herald Linno was bailed to appear in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on April 23.
