Red Cross knits chicks

SIX Naracoorte Red Cross members have been getting crafty in the lead-up to Easter.

They have been knitting egg holders in the shape of chickens and selling them as a fundraiser.

The idea came about at the group's February meeting which Edenhope's Ella McLaren attended.

She said she had been doing it in her area and that it had been very successful.

They got to work and couldn't believe the amount of interest when they put them up for sale.

Naracoorte branch's Barbara Johnson said they had been selling them in the street, at Longridge Aged Care and receiving lots of orders.

"They have sold so well," she said. "It has been such fun and has put Red Cross out there.

"We've been quite excited about how well it has gone."

Fellow member Daphne Burford agreed.

"It has been an absolute ripper of a fundraiser," she said.

"It hasn't been too hard at all. I could do about five in the one night."

The egg holders were being sold for $3 and the group managed to raise about $1500 for this year's Red Cross baby Digby Wight.

Next year they are planning to do a similar project with a twist.

"We are going to do something new, something a little different," Mrs Burford said.
