COONAWARRA Grape and Wine Incorporated has announced the winner of its prestigious Cabernet Leaders Award.
Sarah Andrew, owner of Selador Wines Pty Ltd, was announced as the winner of the $10,000 research prize.
Ms Andrew is passionate about Coonawarra and about Cabernet Sauvignon.
She has been professionally linked to the region since 2005 and is thrilled to see that Cabernet Sauvignon has recently become the number one planted international variety globally, a trend which follows suit in Coonawarra.
In her research, Ms Andrew will investigate recent market trends both domestically and internationally for premium Cabernet Sauvignon and compare Coonawarra's consumer engagement with international regions and other varieties.
"As Cabernet Sauvignon charges ahead as the most planted international variety globally, there should be excitement in the Coonawarra region and about Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon in both domestic and international markets," she said.
Key research questions will include:
- What are journalists, wine buyers, sommeliers and retailers saying about Cabernet Sauvignon and Coonawarra?
- How are wine professionals influencing consumer perception of Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon?
- What is consumer opinion of Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon?
- Does consumer perception match reality when given a blind taste test?
The project aims to explore both the theoretical position of Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon and the practical tasting perception.
Research will cover Cabernet Sauvignon from a global perspective, looking at trends, countries and key regions such as Bordeaux, California, Italy, Argentina and Chile - and a comparison will be made to Coonawarra.
A detailed online survey will explore consumption of Cabernet Sauvignon, including frequency, place of purchase, price points, regional loyalty, brand loyalty and value for money position.
Ms Andrew will aim to gain support through Wine Communicators of Australia, Sommeliers Australia, Sydney Wine Academy, Guild of Sommeliers, and WSET Global. The target audience will include journalists, sommeliers, wine buyers, restaurant managers, retail managers, buyers, wine educators and the general public.
The final results will be presented at the 2015 Cabernet Symposium as part of the Coonawarra Cabernet Celebrations in October.
