RUGBY league has come to the SE - and a Naracoorte team is helping the sport to get a foothold in the local area.
The Naracoorte Jets are taking part in the newly formed Mount Gambier Rugby League 9s competition, which had its first official competition round last Friday night.
The Jets team comprises 14 players who are predominantly Australian and New Zealander, with a sprinkling of a few other nationalities.
Training on Tuesday and Thursday nights, the Jets have prepared well for the competition and have already proven likely finalists.
The Jets will play against three other Mount Gambier-based clubs each Friday night and the league has plans to grow and possibly incorporate junior and female competitions in the future.
Jets team member Tui Makoare said developing the team had given locals direction and stronger ties with the community.
"It has brought many different cultures together to unite and share their passion for an international sport that is becoming stronger and more participated in across the nation."
The Jets are seeking major and minor sponsors to help buy new playing jerseys and training equipment.
There are three levels of sponsorship - from gold ($300) through to silver ($100) to bronze ($50). "The Naracoorte Jets are a group of dedicated rugby players and would love for you to join our team and share in our passion," Tui said.
