Watch out for echidnas | Protect our wildlife

ECHIDNAS have been spotted more and more around the region in recent weeks.

One Lucindale couple had a near miss with one last week but had a shocking story to tell after seeing the car behind them deliberately hit the animal.

Julene Ware and her husband were coming into Naracoorte from Lucindale around 9am on August 27 when they were forced to slightly change direction to miss an echidna crossing the road slightly west of the town.

To Mrs Ware's horror the car travelling about "three or four car lengths" behind them purposely hit the spiky native creature.

"They've gone off the road deliberately," she said.

"It was well and truly off the road...it was on the dirt."

Mrs Ware wasn't able to get the car's registration details but said whoever the driver was should be ashamed.

"I'm most upset that someone should bother to do that," she said. "It's just shocking."
