AS you drive along Riddoch Hwy towards Padthaway this month, you are likely to see some unfamiliar characters.
Nearly 20 scarecrows are scattered on the roadside
and among the vineyards.
The Padthaway Estate and Henry’s Drive scarecrow
competition has received a top response from the local community.
Padthaway Estate co-owner Nigel Catt said the support proved the competition could be an annual
“I think it would be nice to try and do it every year and build it up,” he said.
Padthaway General Store owner Wayne Loft has had numerous drivers stop and enquire about the scarecrows.
In particular they ask whether “a man”, wearing
a bright orange vest and slumped over, is OK.
“It’s been very funny,” he said. “People have stopped to try and pick him up and yelled out to him.”
The competition will be judged in early May and
the winners will be announced at a “shindig” at
Locals will be welcome for drinks and a sausage
sizzle and winners will collect their prizes.
The scarecrows will be used in local vineyards next season to keep the birds away.
