Show of support

THE Penola community is being urged to get behind the Penola and Districts Community Bank project as it enters its next stage: a feasibility study.

Survey forms calling for support for the bank have started arriving in letterboxes around the town and surrounding area.

Penola and Districts Community Bank Steering Committee chairman Mark Edwards said 2000 survey forms had been mailed to local residents, traders and business people calling for their support of the branch.

"We have more than 300 people who would be willing to become shareholders in this public venture but we also need to determine the level of banking business local people would be prepared to bring across to a branch in Penola," Mr Edwards said.

He said the time it took to fill in a form was "less than it takes to boil a kettle" and was a key part of the campaign to bring a community bank to Penola.

"The entire campaign to date has been based on community spirit - we now have to determine whether a community branch for Penola and surrounding districts is a commercial reality."
