Guides go for oath

SERVING God and the Queen isn't part of being a Naracoorte Girl Guide any more.

The traditional pledge was deemed old fashioned by modern Girl Guides and was changed nationwide on July 6.

In a new pledge, the 26 local Guides vow to serve their community and country and to live with courage and strength.

The change has been in the pipeline since August last year, according to Naracoorte leader Andrea Werchiwski.

The 28,000 Guides all over Australia "had input in this. Every single Girl Guide was involved in the promise and law review.

"It was very well explained to every single girl."

Andrea said the old pledge was "pulled to pieces" with every word explained to Guides across the nation.

Guides had age-appropriate activities to complete to improve their understanding of the pledge.

"So they felt like they had a say in the process," she said.

"It was really well reviewed. The kids were really excited about it."
