Storm damage

LAST week's wild and wintry weather caused significant damage to the local area.

Trees were uprooted and rooves were blown off houses as gale force winds hit last Wednesday afternoon.

Naracoorte Lucindale Council received over 20 calls about trees on roads and general storm damageand there were four CFS call-outs.

CFS captain Allan Marshall said a large tree fell on Caves Rd and part of a roof blew off a house on Jenkins Tce.

"Some of the tiles and aluminium sheet had started to come off but we nailed it down and managed to make it safe," he said.

A large pine tree was also ripped from the ground by a strong gust of wind at the William MacIntosh Motor Lodge, damaging the power to the sewage system.Managers Ray and Jean Ogilvy said they could not believe their eyes.

"I heard a mighty crack, looked outside and saw it falling," Jean said.

She said it looked like an earthquake had moved the ground because the tree roots had been ripped up, leaving a huge hole.

The last CFS call-out was to McLay St where a tree had fallen on a car and house.

The windscreen of the car was smashed but luckily there was only minor damage to the house, Mr Marshall said.

Council staff were out cleaning up the streets the next morning as well as inspecting houses for damage.

Severe weather conditions were reported all throughout SA and the State Emergency Service had 430 calls for help.

It was only at 10pm that the weather calmed down. Wind gusts of up to 138km/h were reported in Port Lincoln.
