THE Lucindale airstrip has been targeted by vandals.
Local police are investigating an incident at the airstrip, possibly overnight on September 1, which caused over $1000 damage.
Senior Sergeant Tom Carter said: "A motor vehicle caused damage to the unsealed surface by an apparent act of stupidity whilst doing circlework (hoon driving)."
As is the case with any damage caused to public property, costs for repair come out of taxpayer rates and local budgets.
"This airstrip is used by CFS water bombing aircraft, crop spraying aircraft and on occasions, private aircraft. With the onset of summer and the risk of bushfires, coupled with the possible use by the RFDS, this stupidity could have put the safety of the community at risk.
"Fortunately the CFS and crop spraying aircraft can continue to use the airstrip pending repairs being undertaken.
"CASSA was made aware of the damage to the airstrip and advice was provided to other users."
Senior Sergeant Carter said on Monday it was understood the council had repaired the damage. Police are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident or may be able to help police with their enquiries to contact the Lucindale Police or SA Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
