MEMBER for MacKillop Mitch Williams was replaced as deputy leader of the State Opposition on Tuesday, but remained positive it was for the greater good of the party.
He said it would secure Isobel Redmond's leadership position and ensure the Liberals' success in the next election.
"I am ecstatic Isobel survived the challenge," he told the Herald. "We are now in a position to not only win the 2014 election but to do something the party has not done in a long time - win at least three terms."
Mr Williams made the decision to step down after several party members had called for drastic change.
"I was adamant I wanted to keep Isobel as leader so to satisfy those wanting change I made the decision to step down from deputy leader.
"I am fairly confident it will help to dispel any anxiety."
MP Steven Marshall was elected unnopposed as Mr Williams's successor, making way for a new look leadership team.
Mr Williams expected to be kept in the shadow cabinet with a significant role as a senior and experienced shadow cabinet member.
He said he was excited to get back to the grass roots side of politics, one of the more enjoyable aspects of the job.
"Over the years I have not been able to spend that much time in my own electorate. I am looking forward to having more time in the SE and on my farm."
