Quirky comp returns

Hutchisons Plants Plus encourage locals to get their ideas ready to enter in a “quirky garden” competition in April.

The competition is back again this year and is set to be held from April 28-30.

This popular event was first held in October, 2015.The inspiration came from keen gardener and long-time customer, Glenys Ottens.

Glenys changed her gardening style after suffering a stroke several years ago.

Instead of allowing her disability to prevent her from getting out into her garden, Glenys said: “I just got out and did what I could.”

This meant gardening in containers so that she could work standing at a bench.

She now plants her vegetables in foam boxes recycles discarded containers into ornamental gardens.

Glenys has a very generous spirit and many of her creations are much loved gifts for her friends.

A regular contributor to local craft markets, Glenys has become well known for her quirky combinations of recycled objects and plants.

Andrew Hutchison, from Hutchisons Plants Plus said: “I couldn’t resist buying her duck pond garden when I saw it at the Naracoorte Swap Meet.

“It was just an amazing combination of succulents, planted into a recycled pet basket with a plastic decoy duck sitting in the middle of it,” Mr Hutchison said. “It was quirky but also very attractive.”

Hutchisons Plants Plus has decided to revisit the idea of a quirky garden competition after the success of the original event, which raised over $600 for the Cancer Council.

The judging will be people’s choice voting by way of a gold coin donation.

There will be multiple prizes for both open and the children’s sections which was previously well supported by the local schools.

“The whole emphasis of the competition is to let your imagination go wild and have fun,” Mr Hutchison said.

Anything can be planted up such as old boots, cooking pots and wheelbarrows.

The only condition is that it must be able to be successfully transported to the nursery so that it can be displayed and judged.

The quirky garden competition will also coincide with a 26th annual fuchsia show, which will again feature an amazing display of fuchsias from Weald View Fuchsia nursery.

Competition entries must be dropped into the nursery between April 20-27.

For more information, contact the nursery on 8762 3566 or visit their Facebook page.
