Luke Patrick, Naracoorte actor makes TV break

Former Naracoorte resident Luke Patrick has had his big break in acting, winning a role on New Zealand’s Shortland Street TV series.

Luke returned to Naracoorte to spend the holidays and is now set to be a huge part of the show’s 25 year anniversary. Shortland Street will appear on Foxtel early in the new year.

We get to know Luke and find out a bit about his experience at Shortland Street.

How did you get your role on SS?

One of my good friends (Lukas Whiting) was acting on the show. He recommended me for the role, and here I am!

How long have you been acting and how did you get your first big break?

Shortland Street would be my big break. I didn't fully release how much of a big deal it was until I got here. I've done 5 years of acting, which includes 4 years of full time study, one year of doing short films and now Shorty.

Name three similarities between you and your onscreen character.

We both look similar. We are both very family orientated. We both love coffee.

What has been your best experience/scene on the show to date?

There has been a lot to choose from, but I can't say. Spoilers!

Which other character would you like to be and why?

Ryan's character Cam is really cool, he brings a form of excitement to the show.

What are your hobbies/interests outside of SS?

Learning my lines would be one. Socialising with new friends, camping and fishing, fitness.

What do you do in your down time during the day when you're not shooting?

Again learn my lines. Go to the gym. I'm still settling in Auckland really.

What is your favourite destination in NZ and overseas?

I haven't really travelled much of New Zealand, but looking forward to exploring this beautiful country. I lived in Whistler for a year back in 2008/09. That country and the people are amazing. I would love to live there again one day and buy a house there.

How many brothers and sisters do you have, are they older or younger?

One younger sister.

What is your date of birth and what star sign are you?

May, I'm a Taurus.

Who is the actor or actress that you look up to or admire the most?

Daniel Day Lewis, Tom Hardy, Sean Penn, Dustin Hoffman, Meryl Streep, Amy Adams.

What is the thing you enjoy most about going to work every day?

Getting to do what you love every day.

Do you watch Shortland Street at home? If yes, is it strange seeing yourself on television or are you used to it?

I haven’t seen myself on NZ television yet. But I do like to find out what others think of my performance from time to time.

What is your favourite food?

I love my seafood, and pizza.

What is your favourite television program and/or film of all time?

Vikings would have to be up there. Sons of Anarchy, The Killing.

Are you from Auckland or did you move here to film Shortland Street? Where did you grow up?

I'm from Naracoorte, South Australia.

Which other actors/actresses do you like working with the most and why?

I love working with Lucy Lovegrove and Lukas Whiting a lot. Michael Galvin is pretty funny to work with. To be honest, I love working with everybody!

Have you made any good friends among the cast and crew?

I would like to think so…haha. We're all a pretty tight nit family here at Shorty.

What's the best experience you've had with a fan/fans?

Haven't had one yet but looking forward to meeting the fans of the show.

Can you remember your first day on Shortland Street – what was it like?

Yes – it was quite intense but fun and exciting at the same time.
