Naracoorte Model Aero Club held its annual fun fly at the club’s field on Messamurray Road in almost ideal weather conditions last weekend.
Visitors from Ararat, Hamilton, Camperdown, Mount Gambier, the Riverland and Adelaide stayed out at the field or in local motels.
More than 30 pilots registered over the weekend, with over 100 model aircraft on display.
Just before 11am Saturday, club president Matthew Dunstan welcomed all to the flying field. A minute’s silence was then observed for Remembrance Day, before flying restarted.
Local military historian Shane Smith added a special dimension to Remembrance Day with his display of aviation themed memorabilia. The club would like to thank Shane for his contribution to this special day.
During the afternoon flying was paused while Barry Lawrence, the first president of the club, cut a cake to celebrate 50 years of the Naracoorte Model Aero Club.
Saturday evening saw more than 30 people sit down to a roast dinner enjoying the calm conditions and a colourful sunset before being entertained by night flying models equipped with LED lights.
Models flown over the weekend ranged from gliders to sports models, scale models of military and civilian aircraft, helicopters and drones.
Rick Pimblott from Ararat and District Aeromodellers Club thrilled the crowd with the sound, smell and speed of his jet turbine, and Richard Mudge, a regular visitor from the Riverland, gave several exciting demonstrations of precision flying with his DeHavilland Comet and ‘Golden Era’ Cassut Pylon Racer.
Shaun the Sheep toys equipped with parachutes were deployed from John Gericke’s load carrying military cargo aircraft.
Matthew Dunstan and Matthew Hoskings also gave a display of formation flying with T-28 Trojan aircraft.
The field was in magnificent condition for the weekend due the hard work of club members in preparation for this major annual event.
Many thanks to all those club members who helped make this weekend such an outstanding success for everyone who attended, and to those local businesses who supported it.
