A large contingent of Naracoorte junior basketballers is heading off to top level competitions this month.
Possibly the largest group of locals ever have won selection for two major events in NSW and Victoria.
Junior players and officials will take part in the Australian Country Junior Basketball Cup at Albury, NSW, from next Tuesday, while two will also play in a junior tournament at Eltham, Victoria next weekend.
Renowned local coach Glenn Mathieson, who will go to Albury as an under 14 coach, said the locals had a fantastic strike rate in trying out for the competitions this year.
A total of 16 local juniors tried out, with 12 winning selection, three earning spots as reserves and only one missing out.
Those chosen for Albury were: under 18 – Oscar Clark, Olivia Slattery, Gabby Van Rijn, Zac Walker, Matt Black; under 16 – Harry McInnes; under 14 – Jemma Kavanagh, Eliza Corbin, Mykaela Walker, Chloe Harding (injured). Bree Garrigan is also attending as an under 14 assistant coach, Susie Maber as an umpire and Nic Lacey as under 14 team manager.
Ollie McInnes and Sam Thomson have both been chosen to play under 15s at Eltham.
