Former AFL player Angus Monfries will debut for Kybybolite in the Tigers’ game against Kingston on Saturday.
Monfries has been playing with the Footscray Bulldogs in the VFL but will play a guest game with the Tigers. He has local links through being part of the syndicate that bought Naracoorte’s Kincraig Hotel this year.
While there will be plenty of interest in that game at the seaside, one of the games of the season at Penola will go a long way to deciding the make-up of the KNTFL’s top three.
Penola (2nd on ladder) will host Keith (3rd), with both sides desperate to stay inside the top three and within striking distance of top spot.
Penola is one win clear at the moment but has a lower percentage than the sides below and could drop to fourth if it slips up in the run home.
Last time the teams met in round 4 they played out a classic while Penola won by five points – this one could be as close.
Adding extra interest to the clash is that both sides will be missing two gun players with state country duties. Keith will be without midfielder Bill Laurie and full forward Ben Simounds, while Penola will be missing in-form midfielders Scott Merrett and Simon Berkefeld.
The other games this weekend don’t feature finals combatants against one another.
Most will have firm favourites, with Lucindale expected to beat Padthaway and K/L United likely to be too good for Bordertown.
Mundulla could have its hands full against a Border Districts side that nearly upset Penola last week, while the game at the seaside between Kingston and Kybybolite could be a toss of the coin.
