Ananda Organic and Pearl Indian Cuisine have both been nominated for the Regional Showcase People’s Choice Award, sponsored by Brand South Australia.
Now it's up to the public to have their say in who they think best deserves the recognition by voting for their favourite business or businessperson.
Ananda Organic are a boutique garlic farm near Naracoorte, run by Rob Wallis and Liz Crowley.
The garlic from Ananda Organic is grown all year round, due to the different varieties in their crops. The garlic is also organic, and tended by hand.
Ananda Organic also sells crushed and pickled garlic, bringing home their third consecutive gold medal in the Australian Food Awards for its Korean-style pickled garlic.
The other Naracoorte business up for nomination is Pearl Indian Cuisine, a restaurant run by Hazara refugee Hafeezullah Haidari.
As well as creating authentic Southern Asian dishes, Hafeezullah regularly contributes to the community.
He is a member of Rotary, and regularly provides catering for Australia Day. He also provides CFS volunteers with free meals during emergencies.
Hafeezullah is a mentor to many migrants and students in the town. Students who speak English as a second language are often employed at the Pearl Indian to increase their confidence and job prospects.
