Keith oval in top nick for KNT football grand final

A month ago, parts of Keith football oval were under water and hosting this weekend’s KNTFL grand finals looked like being a race against time.

But with a significant investment of time and money from the club, and a little help from the weather gods, the oval surface for this weekend is looking pristine.

League representatives inspected the oval last weekend and gave it the tick of approval, and Keith club president Kym Wilson confirmed late this week that the oval is ready to go.

“The oval’s going well,” he said. “It’s greened up really well.

“We’ll be rolling it tomorrow but it looks right to go.”

Mr Wilson said a lot of work had gone into improving the oval surface, including laying rolls of new lawn measuring 10m x 1m five weeks ago, sowing some ryegrass and spreading sand.

He said the main problem had been waterlogging caused in part by teething problems with a new automatic sprinkler system installed back in January.

But the improvements plus a month of drier weather have the surface looking A1 for Saturday’s four games of football, with junior colts playing from 9am, senior colts 10.20am, reserves 12 noon and A grade 2.20pm.

Mr Wilson said off the ground, everything was in place for a great grand final day.

There will be three bars and five eateries including the usual canteen, two scoreboards and marquees dotted around the oval for shelter in case of inclement weather.

There will also be a mobile ATM machine provided by Bendigo Bank situated near the netball stadium.

As is the case with all KNTFL grand finals, parking inside the venue will be restricted.

Some people with permits have reserved parking spaces, while the club has decided to allow some parking inside the gates because of the possibility of inclement weather.

There will be space for 150-160 vehicles to park on the raised mound on the eastern side of the oval, with access to this area available at the northern gates to the oval.

However anyone who parks in this area will not be able to remove their vehicle until after 4.30pm.

Those planning to leave earlier should seek parking space at the designated parking area off Bennett Street, south-west of the oval.
