A house burned down in the main street of Apsley on Tuesday night.
The Wallace Street house appeared to be unoccupied, but fire investigators were travelling to the scene Wednesday morning to confirm the details. Those at the scene believe the fire may have been suspicious.
About 25 CFA volunteers and six tankers from Apsley and Edenhope responded to a callout about 8.10pm (Victorian time).
When they arrived, Apsley group deputy officer Steve Hocking said they tried to extinguish the blaze with the available tankers, but it was "too far gone".
"We sat on it for an hour and let it burn out, let the roof collapse and that sort of thing, then we hit it again and put it out."
Five of the six CFA appliances were released about midnight, with one remaining on the scene until the morning.
Mr Hocking said while the fire investigators would be responsible for determining the cause, "we'd be classing it as suspicious at this stage".
Apsley is located about 30km east of Naracoorte.
