Perfect time to wine down at the Naracoorte Hotel

If you love food and wine then be sure to mark Thursday, May 30 in your calendar.

Naracoorte Hotel will play host to Almostwinta Wine Down, a celebration of local produce featuring Yalumba wine ambassador Jane Ferrari and winemaker Nat Cleghorn.

Wine from Yalumba, Jansz Tasmania and Smith & Hooper will play a starring role on the evening, with each of three courses to be expertly paired with a delicious drop.

"As it gets to June, that's when we start the Yalumba rare and fine circuit and release all our new reds - the head chef has a set of the wines - there will be wines from Wrattonbully and Coonawarra and something a bit interesting we're bringing down from the Barossa," Jane explained.

While some people put little to no thought into what they drank with their meals, Jane said pairing wine with food added an enjoyable dimension to dining and was something that should not be intimidating.

"It doesn't have to be all white tablecloths and dinner suits - it can be a lot of fun," she said.

"Wine is an important industry for the area, and with all of the produce being local, this event is a wonderful way for the local community to support their local region."

Jane said the growth in the number of food and wine shows on television had opened up many people's eyes (and palates) to a whole new world of eating and drinking possibilities.

"We're in an interesting time with people pairing boutique beers, whiskies and spirits with food," she said.

"It's like having a super cool special interest and anyone can do it.

"(Recently) we did an event for a wine festival in Des Moines, Iowa.

"Pork tenderloin is the state dish and four chefs came to the state fairground and used deep fryers to do their versions of it - we matched our wines and it was served 'picnic style' and it was sold out."

Without giving away too much about the menu planned for the night, Naracoorte Hotel head chef Renee Leehane said guests could expect to dine on "good old-fashioned hearty fare", and she had created a very special menu to complement the wine selection, which would reflect the onset of cooler weather.

"Something like grandma might make, with a modern twist - we will serve finger food with champagne to start, followed by an entree, main and dessert that will be paired with particular wines to enjoy in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere," Renee said.

In addition to wonderful wine and fantastic food, the evening will also feature auctions and giveaways.
