The SA Square Dance Society and local club Acey Squares are bringing a mammoth square dancing event to the Naracoorte Town Hall.
The weekend will kick off on Thursday August 22 with 13th birthday celebrations for local square dance club Acey Squares. There are several live callers programmed to call as opposed to recorded music and choreography at the regular club nights.
The 44th SA State Square Dance convention will then follow with a full program of almost continuous dancing covering three levels of square dancing and several modalities of round dancing.
In all, eight sessions of dancing for the weekend will start Friday morning with a round dance program followed on Friday afternoon by Mainstream, Plus, A1 and A2 levels.
Friday night will be mainstream dancing with an official opening by the mayor Erika Vickery at about 8.15-8.30pm.
Dancing continues on Saturday with three dance sessions, morning, afternoon and evening. Saturday evening is a theme night with fancy dress of the interpretation of "Click go the shears".
Sunday morning will follow with something different for the square dancers, holding a line dancing session led by a local Mount Gambier tutor and team.
Sunday afternoon will be a low key, fun social session of mixed dances.
The dancers have been lucky enough to secure the services of Howard Cockburn, from Crossroad Squares in Werribee Victoria as feature caller for the event. Howard is one of Australia's pre-eminent callers and the group is very happy to have him come and entertain.
Group members welcome and encourage the public to pop your head into the town hall at any session and see the spectacle of square dancing, not ever seen of this magnitude in Naracoorte and may not be seen again for a very long time.
