Grow a mo and help a bro

Men across the region are nurturing their moustaches to raise awareness for men's mental health.

The Naracoorte RSL Bowling Club is hosting Sit Down with Strings on from 6pm this Saturday to help break the stigma surrounding mental health.

Guests will have the opportunity to hear a talk by two time Glenelg premiership footballer Alan Stringer who will share some of the battles he's faced.

The event is open to the general public and finger foods will be available for those feeling peckish.

Movember is a global organisation started in 2003 by two Aussie men.

Since its inception, Movember has become a worldwide fundraiser which aims to reduce the number of deaths among young men by 25 per cent in the next 10 years.

Given she can't quite grow a moustache, Naracoorte resident Jodie Mark is partaking in Move for Movember; a 60km walk or run which is to be completed before the end of the month.

"I'm doing Move for Movember because 10 years ago, my stepdad Lewis Weaver committed suicide," Jodie told the Herald.

"He helped raise me from the age of eight to 18."

Jodie said he and her stepdad moved to Naracoorte when she was nine because he was offered a nursing position at the local hospital.

"He loved caring for people and always put smiles on patients' faces. Unfortunately he became allergic to latex rubber so couldn't work in the hospital anymore."

Jodie said this turn of events created a "downhill spiral of sadness and drinking", and led to the breakdown of her family.

"A few years later, he seemed to be OK, even happy. He had created a life on his own with loyal friends by his side."

Although he seemed fine, sadly, he soon took his own life.

"What I miss most about him was the fun and laughter he brought to any occasion; his big smile and his love and dedication to his family."

It is tragic events like this which prove how important it is to show people it's alright to speak up and seek help.

Naracoorte residents such as Rob Norton and members of the Naracoorte RSL Bowling Club have already raised a combined total of $2521.

To donate, visit au.movember.com, enter in the group or individual's name into the search bar and click the blue 'donate to' button.

Each donation goes towards the Movember organisation reaching their goal of reducing the amount of young deaths across Australia.

Tickets for Saturday night's Sit Down with Strings event are $20 each and can be bought by contacting organiser Lindy Mark on 0429 154 402.
