The Naracoorte Market Square skate bowl and pump track officially opened

Kids of all ages were delighted to officially open the new Naracoorte Market Square skate bowl and pump track today.

An official opening of the project was held on Monday afternoon, and the rain did not deter the children from trying it out.

Speaking at the event, Mayor Erika Vickery said there was truly something for everyone at Market Square.

"Even mum and dad can have a basketball game, or go on the swings or be brave on the skate park, there is something for everyone here," she said.

"Slowly, as we develop the masterplan that went to public consultation in 2016, we are gradually making it a real premier playground area.

"I have heard people say that if they are travelling, they really like to look at playgrounds to let their children out, have a run around and get rid of their energy and playgrounds and areas like this are exactly what they looking for.

"It doesn't only add to the amenity for the people that live here but also our visitors. We are so pleased to see the further development of market square."

The project was funded through the federal government's Local Roads and Community Infrastructure funding, which contributed $215,000 to the $250,000 project, with council funding the remainder.

"We are so pleased to have brought this project forward because without that funding it would have been staged but it would have taken longer without it," Mrs Vickery said.

Member for Barker Tony Pasin helped Mayor Vickery and local children to cut the ribbon and officially open the park.

"I have to congratulate the Naracoorte Lucindale Council for this project, and for all their projects and putting community at the heart of what they do," he said.

"We want to make our places, our communities and our townships a place to stay an extra day and this is a great reason why people might stay an extra day, or pull in and have lunch in Naracoorte and let the kids have a play.

"For the locals, it is making it an even better place to live, work and raise a family."

The lead contractor for the new skate bowl and pump track was Grind Projects Pty Ltd from Kyneton, Victoria. Local businesses were also sub-contracted to complete some of the works.

Community consultation was undertaken in 2016 on the design of the Stage 1 upgrade of the skate park , which identified the need for the new skate bowl and pump track were identified.

The latest works form part of the implementation of the Market Square Masterplan, which has included shade structures over the playground, an improved path network, the establishment of a carpark to include long-vehicle carparking, playground soft-flooring upgrades, additional shelters and picnic furniture, the installation of a dog park and landscaping.
