For sharing an array of stories about her new home, Naracoorte Herald journalist Elisabeth Champion has been named as one of three finalists in the Kennedy Awards.
Australian Community Media (ACM) titles, including the Naracoorte Herald, have clinched finalist berths across a range of categories in the prestige awards that recognise excellence in photography, podcasting and newspaper journalism in print and online.
Elisabeth is delighted to call Naracoorte home, and has embraced the opportunities the town and its surrounds have provided to her and her growing family.
"It's an absolute honour to be able represent Naracoorte and the great community we have here," she said.
"Since moving to Naracoorte a year ago, I have met some of the most kind-hearted and wonderful people who help to make the region such a great and diverse place and it is a privilege to be able to tell the local stories that matter to this community."
With such a diverse community and culture, Elisabeth said the Limestone Coast had a myriad of stories to tell.
"The past year has been a trying one for the region, with bushfires, the COVID pandemic and border closures but through it all, the resilience and enduring spirit of this community has been admirable," she said.
"Behind every 'bad news' story is a local hero or quiet achiever; whether it is the story of two police officers who were the bright spot during tough border restrictions or the CFS volunteers who fought tirelessly to protect Lucindale - they are the people and the stories regional journalism is all about.
"Local journalism is the heart of a community and I hope I can continue to work and advocate for this region and help contribute to the wonderful place it is."
ACM Group Editor for South Australia Greg Mayfield said Elisabeth Champion continued to live up to her name.
"She is a champion of good journalism and local causes in Naracoorte and the South East, playing a key role in our newsroom as well as having many links with her community," he said.
"Elisabeth, as recognised by her nomination, is a fine writer and displays the skills of a dedicated all-round reporter."
Elisabeth is a finalist along with Ashleigh Tullis from the Illawarra Mercury, and Ciara Benbow from the Lithgow Mercury - all three work for titles owned by ACM.
The Kennedy Awards will be presented at a ceremony on September 24.
